Equatorial Guinea President’s Son In Court, Faces 18-Year Sentence For Selling National Aircraft

Ruslan Obiang Nsue, the son of Equatorial Guinea’s president, is facing an 18-year prison sentence and a fine of 500 million CFA Francs ($847,000) for selling a national airline’s aircraft illegally.

The trial began in Malabo, where Nsue admitted to selling the plane for 250,000 euros but only received half of the payment. Charged with multiple offenses including embezzlement and abuse of power, Nsue was previously the deputy general manager of Ceiba Intercontinental.

The investigation began after the plane, undergoing maintenance since 2018, was found sold to a Spanish company. Nsue was arrested in 2023 and placed under house arrest by his half-brother, the vice president.

The president, Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, has ruled for 45 years, while another son, Teodorin, was sentenced in 2021 by a French court for embezzlement.
