“Father Accuses UNIMEDTH Consultant of Negligence in Son’s Death, Management Launches Investigation”

The father of a 300-level student from the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) has filed a petition against the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital, Akure (UNIMEDTH) after his son passed away at the hospital, allegedly due to the negligence of a consultant doctor at the Ondo State government-owned facility.

The father, Prince Bola Adebobola, claimed that the consultant doctor, Dr (Mrs) Alabi, repeatedly neglected to attend to his son, Goodness Adedotun Adebobola, after he was placed under her care following his admission to UNIMEDTH for an ailment, which ultimately led to his death.

In the petition, addressed to the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the hospital, Dr Adesina Akintan, and copied to the state Commissioner for Health and the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Adebobola is demanding justice.

Akintan informed Sunday Vanguard last week that the management of UNIMEDTH had initiated an investigation into the death.

“I am deeply pained, heartbroken, and saddened to report to your management the negligence of one of your consultant doctors, Dr (Mrs) Alabi from the Haematology Department, in treating my son, Adebobola Goodness Adedotun, a 300-level Computer Science student at the Federal University Oye-Ekiti, Ekiti State, which ultimately resulted in his untimely and unjust death,”

the father wrote in a petition dated August 22, 2024.

He stated that his son was admitted to the A&E Ward of UNIMEDTH on August 3, 2024, and passed away on August 11, 2024. Recounting the events leading to his son’s death, the father explained: “My son was admitted to UNIMED Teaching Hospital on August 3, 2024, for malaria and body pain (he had sickle cell anaemia) and was assigned as a patient to Dr (Mrs) Alabi.

“My son was given Bed 14 in the A&E Ward.

“While my son was bedridden, the doctor on duty instructed his mother to locate Dr (Mrs) Alabi, as she was the one responsible for his care.”
