Tension is building in Kano State over a reported plan to dethrone Emir Muhammad Sanusi II. Sources from the Kofar Kudu Palace claim that key figures are working to remove the former Central Bank Governor from his role as the Emir of Kano. The plot is said to be led by APC National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, although this has not been officially confirmed.
Ganduje and Sanusi have a history of clashes, including the latter’s controversial removal in 2020. The current plan involves securing President Bola Tinubu’s support to permanently unseat Sanusi. There is also pressure on former Emir Aminu Ado Bayero to step down, as part of efforts to resolve leadership disputes within the Kano Emirate.
Loyalists to Ganduje, including business and political elites, are backing the move, portraying it as a path to peace in the region. However, it appears the real goal is to consolidate Ganduje’s influence over the Kano traditional leadership.
