The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) claims it is not solely to blame for grid collapses, citing outdated equipment that is 40 to 50 years old.

Sule Abdulaziz is the CEO of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN). He emphasized that TCN should not be solely blamed for the frequent national grid collapses. He explained that issues can arise from generation, transmission, and distribution systems. He reported two recent grid disturbances but clarified that a third reported collapse was inaccurate; it was merely a setback during restoration efforts.

Abdulaziz noted that grid collapses have decreased since 2015, with over 18 months without a collapse since 2022. He highlighted the need for substantial investment in Nigeria’s aging transmission infrastructure. Much of this infrastructure is 40 to 50 years old. He stated that TCN primarily relies on internally generated revenue for maintenance and upgrades. Upgrading the grid is a gradual process, as not all equipment can be replaced at once.
