Hamas will keep its new leader’s identity confidential following the assassination of Yahya Sinwar, the mastermind behind the October 7 attacks. A Hamas official revealed that a new leader will be chosen in March 2025, but until then, a five-member committee will govern.
The committee includes Khalil al-Hayya, Khaled Meshaal, Zaher Jabarin, Muhammad Darwish (head of the Shura Council), and a fifth undisclosed member.
Sinwar, 61, was killed last week by Israeli forces after being targeted for over a year. He was located and killed in a building in Rafah, following a gunfight with the IDF’s 828th Bislamach Brigade. Sinwar attempted to defend himself before being eliminated by a drone. Iran has offered condolences through its foreign minister.
