Controversial social media figure and crossdresser Idris Okuneye, known as Bobrisky, was re-arrested on Thursday night and is set to face interrogation in Abuja regarding allegations of bribery and corruption. An official from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission confirmed that Bobrisky would be flown to Abuja on Friday.
Earlier, he was detained by immigration officers at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos while trying to board a KLM flight to Amsterdam for a trip to London. Bobrisky informed his followers of his arrest through a post on Instagram.
Bobrisky alleged that the EFCC was responsible for his detention.
He wrote,
“Nigerians help me, EFCC just arrested me. I’m badly injured.”
However, according to sources, his arrest was due to his failure to honour several invitations by the commission following his allegations against the EFCC.
Bobrisky had, in a voice note shared by a controversial social critic, Martins Otse, aka VeryDarkMan, allegedly said he bribed EFCC officers with N15m to drop money laundering charges against him.
Although the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) denied the allegations against it, a committee has been formed to investigate the claims. During a press briefing on Thursday, Wilson Uwajaren, the Director of Public Affairs, suggested that Bobrisky could face new charges for making false allegations against the EFCC.
A senior source from the commission revealed that Bobrisky was arrested in Lagos to substantiate his accusations of bribery and corruption. The source emphasized that Bobrisky had previously ignored multiple invitations to discuss the allegations and had also failed to appear before the National Assembly on the matter. The EFCC confirmed his arrest, stating that Bobrisky is en route to Abuja.
