Economist and former education minister, Oby Ezekwesili, criticized Nigeria’s judiciary for enabling what she described as “violations of minors’ rights,” raising concerns over the state of democracy.
Her comments followed a viral video showing emaciated minors detained during an August protest against poor governance. After nearly three months in detention, the minors appeared in court visibly distressed, with one fainting during the proceedings.
The caption to the video shared by investigative journalist Abiodun Sanusi read: “Abuja judge flee courtroom as malnourished minors detained for three months over #EndBadGovernance protests slump.”
