A mining site in Maiagwagwa, located in the Bassa Local Government Area (LGA) of Plateau State, has collapsed, resulting in the deaths of at least 13 individuals.
Dr. Joshua Riti, the Chairman of the LGA, confirmed the tragic incident to reporters on Monday, November 11, 2024, in Jos. He expressed deep sorrow over the loss of life, revealing that the collapse occurred on Saturday.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the mining site, which lies at the boundary of Bassa, Jos South, and Jos North LGAs, was the site of the disaster.
Riti stated that seven of the deceased were from Bassa LGA, describing the incident as tragic. He noted that these young individuals were simply trying to earn a living in the face of the country’s current economic difficulties but met with untimely deaths.
“I extend my deepest condolences to the families and loved ones affected by this tragedy,” he added.
It was reported that most of the victims were young people between the ages of 18 and 30, with six hailing from Kiche land in the Rukuba chiefdom.
