Former Inter Milan and Colombian midfielder Fredy Guarin has revealed his battle with alcoholism and depression during his football career. Speaking with Radio Caracol, the 38-year-old disclosed that his struggles began after moving to China to play for Shanghai Shenhua.
Guarin admitted to drinking heavily daily, often consuming up to 70 beers a night. Despite brief recovery periods, such as during his time at Vasco da Gama in Brazil, the COVID-19 pandemic pushed him deeper into addiction.
“I lost control, spent nights drunk, and even sought danger in Brazil’s favelas,” he shared. Guarin also recounted a near-death experience where he jumped off his 17th-floor apartment balcony but was saved by a safety net.
Reflecting on his journey, Guarin stated, “I realized if I drank again, I would die. I share my story to inspire others and save lives.”
Guarin retired in 2021 after a career spanning clubs like Inter Milan, Porto, and Vasco da Gama.
