A tragic boat accident occurred early Friday along the Dambo-Ebuchi sections of River Niger, resulting in multiple fatalities. The vessel, owned by Musa Dangana, was carrying over 200 people, including market women and farm laborers, headed to the Katcha weekly market when it capsized, throwing everyone into the water.
Local divers are currently engaged in rescue operations, and as of the latest reports, eight bodies have been recovered. Efforts to locate the other missing passengers are ongoing. This incident comes just months after another fatal boat accident on the Muwo Gbajibo River in Mokwa Local Government Area on October 1, 2024.
Preliminary reports suggest that none of the passengers were wearing life jackets, which may have contributed to the high number of casualties. While authorities have not yet issued an official statement, an investigation is expected to determine the accident’s cause (Daily Post Nigeria, November 29, 2024).
