The Gombe State Police Command confirmed a tragic accident during a Christmas procession on Wednesday when an unidentified driver crashed into participants near the Women’s Centre along the Gombe-Bauchi motorway. The procession, a Christmas tradition, involves the Christian community paying homage to the Emir of Gombe and the Governor.
Police spokesperson Abdullahi described the incident as an accident, explaining that the overloaded vehicle, which was carrying bags of grains on its rooftop, collided with the participants. While he did not confirm any fatalities, he stated that the injured were taken to local hospitals for treatment. Abdullahi assured that no deaths had been reported and that efforts were being made to maintain peace.
Eyewitnesses, however, reported a chaotic scene with some suggesting there were fatalities. Grace David, a parishioner, described the shocking moment when the motorist hit the parade, allegedly killing and injuring several people. Danladi Jason, another participant, recounted the procession’s route before the accident occurred.
