Governors elected under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have stepped in to resolve the party’s ongoing leadership crisis. They nullified recent suspensions and counter-suspensions issued by the feuding factions of the National Working Committee (NWC) and called for a return to the status quo while working towards a permanent solution.
Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, who also chairs the PDP Governors’ Forum, announced this decision after a two-day meeting, which included consultations with the NWC, the National Assembly Caucus, and the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT).
The crisis began when the NWC, led by Amb. Umar Damagum, suspended the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, and National Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade SAN, for alleged insubordination and abuse of office. In response, Ologunagba and Ajibade announced the suspension of Damagum and National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu, accusing them of anti-party activities, particularly concerning the political conflict in Rivers State between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.
The situation escalated when Ologunagba’s group declared Yayari Mohammed, the National Treasurer, as Damagum’s replacement. However, a temporary truce has been reached through the intervention of the PDP Governors’ Forum.
Governor Bala Mohammed clarified
“We consulted with the NWC, the National Assembly Caucus, and the BoT. There is no faction within the PDP. All suspensions have been resolved.”
