Writer Ikhide Ikheloa has criticized the presidency for its handling of the Ibadan stampede, which resulted in the deaths of 35 children.
In a post shared on X, Ikhide expressed that in more rational countries, the president would have established a crisis center, providing hourly updates on the situation. He wrote:
“Nigeria. This is why the country faces a global respect deficit. Thirty-five children die in a stampede over a few pennies. In a sensible society, if 35 dogs died in a stampede, the president would set up a crisis center with hourly press conferences, offering updates on the situation. We would know the names of the victims, grief counselors would be available, and there would be clear answers on the steps being taken to prevent such incidents in the future. Thirty-five children died while trying to collect just $3 each. Three dollars. Let that sink in. Our children’s lives are not valued as highly as those of dogs in other nations. Kemi Badenoch is our problem. We are not okay.”
